All volunteers need to have the following:

¨         Ability to read

¨         Ability and willingness to follow directions

¨         Ability and willingness to work independently

In addition to the above, volunteers need to:

¨         Volunteer when scheduled (NOTE: We understand that things come up that may prevent you from volunteering on a particular day.  We do ask that you contact the library if you are unable to keep your shift assignment.)

¨         Be Punctual – Please show up on time.

¨         Adhere to Baxter County Library Volunteer policies and procedures.

Training

¨         The library staff will train you to perform the duties for your job.  However, we do require that you possess the qualifications listed in the job description.

 JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 Multipurpose Volunteer

DESCRIPTION

This volunteer assists the Children's Librarian in many ways including preparing materials for Story Times and special programs/parties.

DUTIES

  • Photocopy materials

  • Cut and assemble parts: paper, plastic, foam, fabric, etc.

  • Check, peel, sharpen, and replace crayons

  • Check and replace glue sticks

  • Simple computer searches (crafts, skills/coloring pages, etc.)

  • Alert Children’s Librarian of items needing to be reordered

  • Regularly check puzzles for condition and missing pieces

  • Help prepare for and set up for special programs and parties

  • Help to keep bulletin board, geese, and room décor seasonal

  • Filing Story Time unit parts

  • Help maintain tidiness of Children’s Room & storage areas

  • Refer patron questions to a staff member

  • Occasional shelving

  • Other duties, as directed

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Willingness to become familiar with the Dewey Decimal System

  • Aptitude for detail, order, and neatness

  • Ability to arrange items in numerical and alphabetical order

  • Experience with filing

NOTE:  Work will be checked for accuracy in the beginning, but with work experience there will be less supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Manual dexterity, vision, and patience for cutting LOTS of the same pieces over and over again

  • Manual dexterity, vision, and patience for assembling parts using glue, glue sticks, hot glue gun, staples, brads, rubber cement, etc.

  • Ability to push, stretch, lift, bend, reach, sit on low stools, and climb ladders

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 3 hours every week

  • Attend all orientation and training sessions

NOTE:  Some projects may be completed off-site
