
All volunteers need to have the following:
¨ Ability to read

¨ Ability and willingness to work independently
In addition to the above, volunteers need to:
¨ Volunteer when scheduled (NOTE: We understand that things come up that may prevent you from volunteering on a particular day. We do ask that you contact the library if you are unable to keep your shift assignment.)
¨ Be Punctual – Please show up on time.
¨ Adhere to Baxter County Library Volunteer policies and procedures.
Training
¨ The library staff will train you to perform the duties for your job. However, we do require that you possess the qualifications listed in the job description.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Adopt-a-shelf Volunteer
DESCRIPTION |
Arrange a section of shelved items so Baxter County Library can best serve the public by having every item in a specific area in its proper place, making it easy for staff and patrons to find and use materials. |
DUTIES |

Learn the unique requirements of shelving for the section
-
"Square" the shelves so that the shelves have an equal amount of materials
-
Pull materials to the front of the shelf
-
Wipe off the surface of the shelf
-
Read spine labels and re-shelve books that are not in the proper order
-
Identify books requiring mending and give to circulation desk to put in mending
-
Shift books as necessary to assure easy access
-
Remove all bookmarks, paper and litter from books and shelves
-
Refer patron questions to a staff member
-
Other duties, as directed

Aptitude for detail, order, and neatness

Circulation Support Volunteer
DESCRIPTION |
Respond to the needs of the Circulation Department, providing support for the front desk. |
DUTIES |

Check books out
-
Respond to patrons in person regarding library information, library materials or services, and refer them to appropriate sources of information.

Search shelves for overdue, missing or lost materials
-
Retrieve materials deposited in the book drop
-
Shelve and straighten books and other circulating materials as necessary
-
Maintain a working knowledge of Microfilm equipment and instruct patrons on usage as necessary.

Perform basic procedures on public copier and assist public in its use
-
Other duties, as directed

Welcome Desk Host / Hostess
DESCRIPTION |
Baxter County Library's Circulation Desk needs a volunteer to assist Mon. through Sat. from 11:30 - 2:30p.m. or between 1:00 and 5:00 on Sunday with issuing new library cards, orienting new patrons and if library staff are busy, checking out materials to patrons. |
DUTIES |

Welcome new patrons applying for a library card, and assist them in completing the application if necessary.

Issue library cards following procedures given.
-
Give the new patrons appropriate brochures/program information/database lists.
-
Invite new patrons to join “Friends of the Library.”
-
Offer a brief tour, and ask if they have questions.
-
Offer a brief orientation on use of Public Access Catalog (PAC).
-
Refer all questions you are unsure of to library staff.
-
If library staff is busy, check out materials to patrons.
