All volunteers need to have the following:

¨         Ability to read

¨         Ability and willingness to follow directions

¨         Ability and willingness to work independently

In addition to the above, volunteers need to:

¨         Volunteer when scheduled (NOTE: We understand that things come up that may prevent you from volunteering on a particular day.  We do ask that you contact the library if you are unable to keep your shift assignment.)

¨         Be Punctual – Please show up on time.

¨         Adhere to Baxter County Library Volunteer policies and procedures.

Training

¨         The library staff will train you to perform the duties for your job.  However, we do require that you possess the qualifications listed in the job description.

 JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 Genealogy Assistant

DESCRIPTION

Assist patrons and visitors in their family searches by directing them to library materials which will be helpful to their research. Volunteer is not expected to do the research for the patron.

DUTIES

  • Sign out and monitor use of local history and genealogy materials from locked cases

  • Become acquainted with the library's genealogy and Arkansas history resources, including online database resources

  • Direct beginning researchers to materials which help them start a genealogical search

  • Give limited instructions in Heritage Quest database searching and printing

  • Assist patrons in loading microfilm in microfilm reader and giving basic instructions for using the reader. Collect fees from use of microfilm printer.

  • "Read" the shelves in the Genealogy and Arkansas areas as time permits

  • Familiarize oneself with library policies

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Good interpersonal communications skills

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about local history and historical resources specific to Baxter County and Arkansas

  • Good interpersonal communications skills

  • Patience in dealing with the public

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 3 hours per month.  Slots are available Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm; Saturday 1:00 to 4:00 pm; and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
