All volunteers need to have the following:

¨         Ability to read

¨         Ability and willingness to follow directions

¨         Ability and willingness to work independently

In addition to the above, volunteers need to:

¨         Volunteer when scheduled (NOTE: We understand that things come up that may prevent you from volunteering on a particular day.  We do ask that you contact the library if you are unable to keep your shift assignment.)

¨         Be Punctual – Please show up on time.

¨         Adhere to Baxter County Library Volunteer policies and procedures.

Training

¨         The library staff will train you to perform the duties for your job.  However, we do require that you possess the qualifications listed in the job description.

 JOB DESCRIPTIONS

 Teen Volunteer

DESCRIPTION

  • A Teen Volunteer helps the Teen Librarian with preparation, setup, and running of library programs as well as the day-to-day operations of the library.  This position provides teens with the opportunity to actively participate in the library's operations and provide essential help for providing programs to our teen patrons.

DUTIES

  • Help set up meeting room for events - set up chairs / tables.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Willingness to become familiar with the Dewey Decimal System

  • Aptitude for detail, order, and neatness

  • Ability to arrange items in numerical and alphabetical order

  • Experience with filing

NOTE:  Work will be checked for accuracy in the beginning, but with work experience there will be less supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to push, stretch, lift, bend, reach,  sit on low stools, and visually discern numbers and/or letters on narrow book spines

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Flexible but the volunteer must be dependable and committed to volunteering.

  • These volunteers would be contacted when special projects are being done for the Young Adults.

Shelf Volunteer

DESCRIPTION

A Young Adults Shelf Volunteer plays an essential role by making sure everything is in its proper place, thus making it easier for staff and patrons to find and use materials in the Young Adults area.  Volunteers can ask to work on a specific section or spend time on whatever section needs the most attention. 

DUTIES

  • “Square” the shelves so that the shelves have an equal amount of materials

  • Pull materials to the front of the shelf

  • Wipe off the surface of the shelf

  • Read spine labels and re-shelve books that are not in the proper order

  • Search for lost, overdue, and claims returned books

  • Help maintain tidiness of Children’s Room

  • Refer patron questions to a staff member

  • Other duties, as directed
