Death qualified : A Mystery of Chaos by Kate Wilhelm
Recommended by June King
Here is an interesting excerpt from this book about Barbara, who had given up the law five years before, but she's still "death qualified," still able to defend clients in Oregon who face the death penalty if convicted. True? I don't know:
"Babies make every know human sound in their babbling. The impossible French vowels, seventeen different clicks, the muti-tones of the Chinese, you name it, babies produce them all, and they drop only those that don't get reinforced. Extinction, it's called. They repeat the sounds they hear and lose the others; including some that can't be learned as an adult."
Books by Larell K. Hamilton or Christine Feehan

FIC Hamilton
FIC Feehan
Both have a series and all are worth reading. They have a story and people it is fun to read about. Not just blood and gore (boring).
On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
Recommended by Julie Dykes
Set in the early 60's, Edward and Florence embark on their wedding night with nerves and trepidation. McEwan expertly weaves their lives past and present into one seamless, heartbreaking day.
Firstborn by Robin Lee Hatcher

Fiction - FIC HATCHER
This was the first of Robin Lee Hatcher's books I read, and I picked it up because of the subject matter- adoption. The basic premise of the book is that an adult adoptee decides to search for her birth parents, and deals with the emotions this brings up in her and her adoptive parents as well as her birth parents. I am an adoptee, and I am always interested to see how the complexities of adoption are handled- especially in fiction. To my utter amazement, Robin Lee wrote about all three parts of the adoption triad- birth parent, adoptee and adoptive parent- with accuracy regarding the feelings of all involved. I contacted Robin Lee via her website, and asked how she was able to portray so accurately something that is difficult to explain, even for those involved. She graciously answered me- within a couple of days- and said she had done a lot of research. That is very obvious, and is a trademark of Robin Lee Hatcher's writing. I heartily recommend any of her books!
